WSP says ‘we screwed up,’ suspected DUI driver won’t be charged

The agency discovered a mistake responding to KING 5 News questions.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Despite evidence a driver was impaired when he caused a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5, prosecutors are not able to charge that driver with a crime.

A Washington State Patrol spokesperson blamed a mistake in the investigation.

“It’s a series of unique events that conspired to have a clerical snafu. That’s a nice way of saying we screwed up,” said Washington State Patrol spokesperson Chris Loftis.

Toxicology results showed the 53-year-old driver had cannabis and cocaine in his system at the time of the March 7, 2023 crash
