‘We don’t want this fight’: Canadian official responds to President Trump’s tariff proposal

David Eby said the proposed tariffs would negatively affect both countries.

BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada — The Trump administration announced a tariff on steel and aluminum imports Monday, including from Canada, the largest provider of steel imports.

The 25% tariffs could cause a considerable impact, considering Canada brought in more than 6 million tons of steel in 2024. 

David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, said Monday it’s hard for Canada to predict what President Donald Trump is planning after his latest proposal. In Canada, a premier is the head of government of a province or territory.
