Washington’s fishing industry will likely suffer from Trump, China’s tariff battle

China is Washington’s largest export market, receiving nearly $700 million worth of seafood and agricultural products.

SEATTLE — The escalating tariff battle between the United States and China is expected to have a major impact on Washington state.

China, being Washington’s largest trading partner, accounted for $693 million in seafood and agricultural exports in 2024, according to the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA). In 2023 alone, $166 million worth of fish and seafood was exported to China, as reported by the WSDA.

“I think everybody is really holding their breath at this point,” said Jim Parsons, the CEO of Jamestown Seafood, a local wholesaler.
