Officials from the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) confirmed the first report of an Asian giant hornet found this year in Snohomish County on Wednesday, calling it a “perplexing” find this early in the season.
The hornet was reported on June 4 by a resident in Marysville through WSDA’s online tool. Entomologists later contacted the resident and observed the hornet was a deceased male with a different coloring than ones previously found in the state last year.
The specimen was sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for testing, where it was found to be “unrelated to the Whatcom County or Canadian Asian giant hornet introductions,” according to a
