The “Highway Use Fee” replaces the previous pay-per-mile proposal.
OLYMPIA, Wash. — House Transportation Committee Chair Rep. Jake Fey has a new proposal to raise funds for state highways.
The Tacoma Democrat is proposing car owners pay the state annual fees based on the mileage of their vehicles.
“It’s easy to collect, it’s easy to get the information on miles per gallon,” said Fey.
Earlier this year he proposed gradually having drivers pay for every mile they drive.
Fey said critics raised privacy concerns, and did not want the state to know how many miles they drove in a year,
