Washington legislators just passed a new tax that only impacts Tesla, for now

The tax could one day impact other electric car manufacturers if they adopt this same practice that has gained Tesla billions of dollars.

OLYMPIA, Wash — The Washington state Legislature approved a new tax on Sunday that, for right now, only impacts Tesla. 

The tax stems from Washington’s participation in California’s zero-emission vehicle program, and a particular way that Tesla found to profit from it. 

These guidelines stipulate that of the cars that manufacturers are delivering to Washington state, an increasing percentage of them must be zero-emission vehicles, either powered by hydrogen or electricity, beginning with 22% in 2025.
