Senators want to increase the gas tax by 6 cents, and representatives want a 9-cent hike to help cover a $1 billion deficit.
OLYMPIA, Wash. — Washington state senators and representatives released their respective state transportation budget proposals Monday, both of which included plans to increase the gas tax.
The Senate released two proposals aimed at addressing a $1 billion shortfall in the transportation budget.
“We either made cuts to meet to find that billion dollars, or we looked at what we could do to find new revenue,” said Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, who is in the Senate Transportation Committee. “We chose the latter.”
