Washington health officials are warning that drug overdose rates are on track to break records this year due to an alarming increase in fatalities related to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine.
The Washington Department of Health (DOH) reported Tuesday that the state experienced 418 overdose deaths in the first three months of 2021, up from 378 deaths during the same time period in 2020. Of those overdose deaths this year, 191 were linked to fentanyl.
