Thousands of Washington drivers fled from cops after law limited pursuits

As a new law giving police more leeway to pursue drivers is days from taking effect, police agencies expect more suspected criminals will pull over.

WASHINGTON, USA — The Washington State Patrol logged nearly 8,000 incidents of drivers refusing to stop for troopers in the years after a controversial 2021 state law restricted police officers from chasing suspects. 

As a new state law giving police more leeway to pursue drivers is set to take effect on June 6, some of the state’s police agencies that reported an uptick in fleeing drivers are bracing for a sea change in how suspected criminals respond to their officers’
