Jimmy Carter visited Tacoma in September 1980 as part of his presidential reelection bid in an effort to win the labor vote.
TACOMA, Wash. — As the U.S. mourns the loss of former President Jimmy Carter, Tacoma is remembering his visit to the City of Destiny.
Carter died Sunday at 100 years old, a year and a half after entering hospice.
On Sept. 23, 1980, Carter landed at McChord Air Force Base and traveled to Tacoma in a motorcade. His visit was part of his reelection campaign, and thousands of people turned out to see him.
