There’s a new, happy surprise swimming around in the cold waters of the Salish Sea: an orca calf.
The Orca Network is reporting that L-86 — also known as Surprise! by researchers after her surprise birth in 1991 — gave birth to a new baby calf on Wednesday.
All three southern resident orca pods (J, K and L) were last spotted entering Haro Strait this morning and are currently in the Swanson Channel with the new calf in tow.
This is the third calf for 30-year-old Surprise and second living calf.
