Seattle Police Department Chief Adrian Diaz out amid controversy

Mayor Bruce Harrell announced Diaz would be stepping down as chief to work on special projects at a press conference Wednesday. The mayor said he is appointing former King County Sheriff Sue Rahr as interim chief. 

Rahr was also executive director of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, and a member of President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Harrell said Rahr has indicated she will not be a candidate for the permanent police chief job. 

Harrell appointed Diaz to lead the Seattle Police Department in September 2022. He had already served as SPD’s interim chief for two years following Carmen Best’s resignation in 2020. Diaz rose through
