Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell says 1996 arrest in Iowa shaped advocacy for ‘police accountability’

Mayor Harrell’s charges were dismissed five months after the arrest, court documents show.

SEATTLE — Long before he became the mayor of Seattle, Bruce Harrell was arrested after brandishing a firearm during an altercation in the parking lot of an Iowa casino.

The arrest, which Harrell never publicly discussed before but came to light after multiple local media outlets reported on it Wednesday night, came in September 1996 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa while he was living in Omaha, Nebraska.
