SEATTLE — The Seattle City Council voted 6-3 on Tuesday to allow police to use less-lethal weapons for crowd control, including blast balls and tear gas. 

This decision comes after five years of debate involving city officials, the Department of Justice, and community members.

The new guidelines, which aim to balance public safety with accountability, permit the use of these tools only in specific circumstances, such as when there is an imminent risk of physical injury.
