Seattle City Council approves bill to move 911 dispatch out of the Seattle Police Department

The Seattle City Council voted 7-0 on Monday to pass a bill that will move 911 dispatch operations out of the Seattle Police Department, instead placing call center operations under civilian control.

The dispatch operations will be moved to the new Community Safety and Communications Center (CSCC), created at the end of the 2021 budget process last November. The legislation will move approximately 140 dispatch positions out of the police department and over to the CSCC, according to a staff memo.

The original bill would have also moved 120 parking enforcement officers (PEOs) out of the police department, but a last-minute amendment by Council President pro tempore Lisa Herbold was adopted
