SEATTLE — Researchers confirmed a new calf was spotted swimming with orcas in the J Pod over the weekend.
The Center for Whale Research shared the birth on social media Tuesday, calling it “a sign of hope” for the struggling Southern Resident orcas.
Center for Whale Research Field Biologist Mark Malleson was out doing a photo ID survey when he saw the newborn calf swimming alongside J40 as the pod traveled west past Victoria Harbour on Sunday.
