New bills could make school bond approval easier in Washington state

Requiring a simple majority for bond passage would require voter approval.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Six school districts in Washington state have bond measures on the February ballot and it could be easier for those sorts of measures to pass in the future.

State law currently requires school bonds, used to pay for building maintenance and new construction, receive more than 60% of the vote to pass.

House Bill 4201 would lower the threshold to a simple majority. Senate Joint Resolution 8200 drops it to 55%.

Both bills are scheduled for committee votes Thursday.
