Mechanical failure causes system-wide power outage in Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula

Over 30,000 customers were out of power on Friday morning after a mechanical failure.

GIG HARBOR, Wash. — Tens of thousands of Peninsula Light Co. customers are out of power Friday morning after a systemwide outage.

As of 11 a.m., 17,862 customers were out of power across Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula. That’s about 50% of the utility company’s nearly 36,000 customers.

At the height of the outage, over 30,000 customers were without power.

The outage was first reported about 9:18 a.m., according to a spokesperson for Tacoma Public Utilities. Tacoma Power crews were preparing for scheduled transmission line maintenance
