Light rail reliability issues prompt Sound Transit to declare emergency, expedite fixes

If the operational work isn’t done immediately, Sound Transit said it could threaten performance and compromise safety.

SEATTLE — The Sound Transit Board of Directors passed a measure Thursday that would allow expedited work on the network’s reliability issues.

Sound Transit CEO Goran Sparrman declared an emergency in a written finding Jan. 21, and the board has now ratified the finding.

“The current operational and network infrastructure faces reliability and stability issues,” the motion reads. “To ensure the reliability of services for our passengers, it is critical to implement operational redundancy as well as a modernized and highly available network.”
