King County reports record spike in fatal overdoses; 42 dead in past two weeks

King County Public Health Officials recorded an alarming spike in drug overdose deaths over the past two weeks.

From Dec. 27, 2020 to Jan. 9, 2021, the King County Medical Examiner recorded 42 suspected fatal overdoses — the highest number of overdoses in a two-week period ever documented by the county.

Half of the fatalities were people between the ages of 36 and 55, and 45% were female.

The majority of the overdoses involved multiple drugs, and final toxicology reports are still pending for many cases.

But preliminary results show that 17 fatal overdoses likely involved methamphetamine and seven likely involved fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 80 to 100
