Here’s why flags will be flown at half-staff in Washington this month

Gov. Jay Inslee said he is “deeply saddened” by the death of Jimmy Carter.

SEATTLE — Gov. Jay Inslee has ordered all Washington state and U.S. flags fly at half-staff to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday.

Flags were ordered to fly at half-staff immediately starting Monday. Flags should remain lowered until close of business or sunset on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, which is 30 days after Carter’s death.

Carter, who was the 39th president of the United States, died at 100 years old. He had entered hospice care in February 2023, according to The Carter Center.
