Here are the strongest earthquakes to hit Washington since 2000

Eight earthquakes over 4.5 magnitude have been measured in Washington since 2000.

SEATTLE — A 4.5 magnitude earthquake that hit the San Juan Islands early Monday morning is the latest notable earthquake to affect western Washington in the past two decades. 

The earthquake hit at 5:02 a.m. just off Deer Beach on Orcas Island, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake was measured at a depth of 10.13 miles, according to USGS data. 

It was the region’s largest earthquake since 2019, according to data from the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN).
