Governor-elect Ferguson proposes sweeping budget cuts to combat $12B shortfall

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Washington Governor-elect Bob Ferguson is calling for near across-the-board state agency budget cuts to help bail the state out of a forecasted deficit.

Ferguson, a Democrat who will be sworn in next Wednesday, said he has advised agency heads to come up with ways to find, on average, 6% in savings.

Higher education institutions are being asked to submit 3% reduction proposals. Ferguson said the only exceptions were K-12 and public safety programs.

He said the cuts could save the state $4 billion.
