Former Washington State House Speaker Frank Chopp passes away

KING 5 sources confirmed the longtime public servant’s death on Saturday night.

SEATTLE — Former Speaker of the Washington House of Representatives Frank Chopp has died, KING 5 sources confirmed on March 22. He was 71. 

Chopp served as the state House speaker for 20 years from 1999 to 2019. He left office in January 2025, capping his 30-year career in Washington politics.

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson called Chopp “a force in Washington politics.”
