The incident could have become a solely negative experience, but Li and supporters transformed it into a movement.
Since then, Li has helped launch Very Asian Foundation to celebrate being “very Asian” and help more people feel seen and represented in many spaces including schools and libraries.
It’s major events like the Sunday Funday Luncheon that help raise awareness and raise funds for life-changing moments in people’s lives.
The May Book Project has helped increase the number of books in schools and libraries that have Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander representation through characters and stories.
