Farmers fear future amid decade-long talks over Whatcom county water

Cities, tribes, farms and homeowners are all vying for a share of the same precious resource.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The battle over water rights has been raging in Whatcom County for 20 years.

 Now, slow progress in negotiations has many worried it could last twenty more.

The potato seeds growing at Ferndale’s Ebe Farm drink up 250 million gallons of water every year.

The crop is just one of myriad consumers vying for the precious resource.

“It’s homes, industry, farms, water for salmon, recreation,” said owner Greg Ebe.
