With more cars parked idly outside homes amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a massive surge of catalytic converter thefts in Washington in the past year.
For those of us who are less car savvy than others, a catalytic converter is the device that looks like a muffler in the car’s exhaust system. It converts the pollutants and gasses emitted by the engine into less harmful gasses.
The thieves are brazen and opportunistic, targeting vehicles in residential areas, outside of businesses and even vans belonging to nonprofit organizations: the Seattle Humane Society had four converters stolen this month.
