A critical nationwide blood shortage is being felt here in the Pacific Northwest with non-profit organizations urging more residents to donate blood.
Earlier in April, Bloodworks Northwest issued a “code red” alert, signaling that there was less than a 24-hour supply of blood on shelves to supply to local trauma centers and call for more donations. The nonprofit organization blamed “donor fatigue” and high rates of no-shows for appointments.
That shortage has persisted with less than a single-day supply of O Positive and O Negative — the two blood types required most for emergencies — in stock and demand from hospitals for blood above normal. Bloodworks said it needs to
