103-year-old bridge’s closure isolates key areas of Mount Rainier National Park

WSDOT permanently closed the Fairfax Bridge, blocking public access to key areas of Mount Rainier National Park.

WILKESON, Wash. — There will be no public access to a portion of the Mount Rainier National Park for the foreseeable future due to the permanent closure of the 103-year-old Fairfax Bridge.

The bridge was initially closed April 14 as a safety precaution following an inspection that found deterioration of steel supports. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced April 22 that the bridge would permanently close.
