In the fall of 1999, Jason Katims and his new teen drama series “Roswell” just barely survived the now-antiquated baptism by fire that was the broadcast TV pilot season.

It wasn’t that many years ago that broadcast networks produced dozens of new shows, picked the ones they thought might succeed and presented them to advertisers at the May ritual of the Upfronts in New York City.
