Robert De Niro is one of the titans of the film industry, yet in DuJour magazine’s profile[1] of the Oscar-winning actor, any sense of ego seems to be non-existent and, in fact, he willingly lavishes praise on his fellow actors.
One of the thespians on the receiving end of De Niro’s compliments is James Gandolfini, whose iconic role as Mob boss Tony Soprano on HBO’s The Sopranos made him a star.
When the subject of Gandolfini’s death on June 19[2] at the age of 51 comes up during the interview, De Niro calls the actor’s sudden death a shame.
“It’s terrible. He was too young,” De Niro says. “I wish that he had been more maybe proactive about his health. I don’t know what he did about that, but I wish he had been. It shouldn’t have happened.”
Before Gandolfini’s death, he and De Niro had reportedly[3] been in talks to work together on the HBO Films project Eating with the Enemy.
