Cheap Week: August 29–September 5

Mon, Aug 29Sheer Mag^[1]Philadelphia’s Sheer Mag has a knack for throwing together somewhat disparate parts to make rock music that actually feels fresh in 2016. The band’s core instrumental sound sports a punk aesthetic, but employs guitar riffs that would be more at home on classic rock radio. All the while, firebrand singer Tina Halladay howls with a riot grrrl edge. This seeming hodgepodge manages to feel perfectly natural and delightfully fun. Thur, Sept 1Diana Nyad^[2]Distance swimmer Diana Nyad serves as living proof that it’s never too late to finish what you started. After failing in her bid to swim from Cuba to Florida at 29, she became the first person to make the watery journey without a shark cage at the age of 64. She travels to Town Hall to drive home the inspirational themes of her memoir, Find a Way. Town Hall, $5

Fri, Sept 2Ever So Andriod: The Civil Release Show^[3]The Seattle rock scene does a lot of things right, but it’s not exactly flush with killer industrial electronic rock acts. Ever So Android helps fill that void with throbbing dance beats and cuttingly sharp guitar riffs. The group unveils its latest batch of dark excursions when it heads to Neumos to release the new EP, The Civil. The very rocking local lineup of Hobosexual, Wild Powwers, and Sundries fills out the bill. Neumos, $10

Sept 2–25Washington State Fair^[4]Whether you’re in it for the rides, livestock, concerts, rodeo, or Fisher scones, the Washington State Fair offers a bevy of family entertainment. Escape the city for a day and find that classic fair experience down in Puyallup. Washington State Fairgrounds, Puyallup, $13

Sept 3–5Game Recognize Game^[5]Couples needn’t always work together to push each others artistic urges, sometimes it just takes a mutual encouraging aura. Game Recognize Game documents the creative output of married pair Erin Sullivan (A Frames) and Laura Cassidy (Nordstrom fashion editor/former Seattle Met style editor). The exhibition features Sullivan’s paintings and photographic art, Cassidy’s writings (she’ll release her volume of short fiction, Backyard Birds Barking at Trees), and musical collaborations between the two via the video project Rose Petals Litter the Shore.
