1:03PM EST November 26. 2012 – Scheduled to pick up your Diamond Jubilee Medal from the Canadian Prime Minister? Why not bust out a pair of overalls, a backward baseball cap and a pair of loud sneakers for the honor.
That’s precisely what teen sensation Justin Bieber did over the weekend in Ottawa when PM Stephen Harper presented him with the honor, bestowed upon Canada’s best and brightest who find success abroad.
Bieber’s photo opportunity with Harper got a few second glances across the Web because the 18-year-old singer went super casual in striped overalls with one strap unbuckled, an oversized white T-shirt and his hat turned to the back.
Gawker even christened The Biebz “White Trash Prince[1],” quipping, “Harper, who looks like an extra from The Office, wore a suit for the national ceremony. But not L’enfant terrible.”
The overalls-and-yellow-sneakers look didn’t quite match Harper’s suit-and-tie ensemble, obviously, but Bieber says he was a victim of circumstance, not bad manners.
He explained via Instagram[2] that his outfit was his performance look and he didn’t have time to change.
“I walked straight from my meet and greet to him, if you … expect me to have a change of clothes let a loan (sic) a suit at that specific time that’s crazy, It wasn’t like it was like I was going into his environment we were at a hockey arena.”
Harper took it all in stride though, tweeting[3], “In fairness to @justinbieber[4], I told him I would be wearing my overalls too.”
