Washington agriculture officials trap over 400 Japanese beetles; concerns infestation is growing

Another destructive, invasive pest could soon pose a significant threat to Washington’s agriculture industry.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) reported collecting over 415 Japanese beetles from traps in late June in Grandview, a significant increase from just the three specimens trapped last year. Entomologists are now concerned that an infestation could become widespread in the state if left unchecked.

Originally from northern Japan, the grubs feed on grass roots and damage lawns, golf courses, and pastures. Adult beetles feed on foliage and threaten over 300 plants, including roses, grapes, apples and hops.
