Washington, British Columbia officials preparing for spring return of Asian giant hornets

Washington and British Columbia agriculture officials are preparing for Asian giant hornet season and asking citizen scientists and informed residents to get involved in the tracking and trapping of the invasive pest.

Also known as “murder hornets,” state officials first detected the presence of the hornet in December 2019. The hornets are a threat to Western honey bees and other pollinating insects in the state which have no natural defense. The species can kill an entire honey bee hive in a matter of hours.
