Hundreds of Seattle environmental education programs, volunteers and employees cut from budget

The Seattle Parks and Recreation department will face significant budget cuts in 2026 as part of efforts to reduce the city’s $250 million budget deficit.

SEATTLE — Over a hundred people who volunteer and work in the Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) Department are worried all of the city’s environmental education programs will be cut starting January 2026.

In November 2024, the city approved its new budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, addressing a deficit of over $250 million and highlighting investments in areas such as affordable housing, public safety and homelessness.
