Former Auburn officer Jeffrey Nelson files to appeal his murder conviction

Nelson was convicted and sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of Jesse Sarey.

AUBURN, Wash. — A former Auburn police officer convicted of murder filed to appeal the conviction, according to documents filed Tuesday. 

Jeffrey Nelson was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Jesse Sarey, whom he shot and killed outside a grocery store in May of 2019. He was sentenced to over 16 years behind bars in late January. 

Nelson’s counsel said “significant legal errors” deprived him of his constitutional right to a fair trial.
