ShakeAlert tech gets renewed interest after earthquake near Orcas Island

People can download the MyShake app to be alerted when magnitude 4.5 or greater earthquakes are expected.

SEATTLE — Technology that detects strong earthquakes and alerts residents to their shaking got renewed attention after an earthquake struck near Orcas Island on Monday morning.

The magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit at 5:02 a.m., setting off the early earthquake warning system. Shaking was felt across the Puget Sound region, and some people as far as Seattle and Kent reported feeling it to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
