Hikers, climbers could have increased danger after National Parks layoffs

Increased concerns at the forefront for search and rescue teams after mass layoffs of forest and park rangers.

NORTH BEND, Wash. — Thousands of National Park and Forest Service employees have been laid off, sparking concerns about the safety of outdoor enthusiasts across Washington. Without these workers, trails could deteriorate, hazards may go unchecked, and emergency response times could increase.

Search and rescue teams, like Seattle Mountain Rescue, are preparing for what could be a significantly busier season. Brent Bishop, vice president of Seattle Mountain Rescue, warns that the loss of rescue rangers could stretch resources thin.
