A Christian group wants to erect a 70-foot-tall, illuminated cross atop Tumwater Mountain.
LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — When the clouds part and the heavens open above Ryan Showalter’s backyard, he sees something unnatural.
“It would be very hard to ignore,” Showalter said.
Showalter lives in the shadow of Leavenworth’s Tumwater Mountain, where way at the top you can see the beginnings of what would be a 70-foot-tall, illuminated cross.
And Showalter doesn’t like what he sees.
“There’s so much natural beauty up here,” he said. “We don’t need something unnatural right in the middle of it.”
