Benefit concert held for Seattle’s Dr. Jose Rizal Park after theft and vandalism

A statue of Rizal was vandalized when several bronze plaques were stolen from the park in October 2024.

SEATTLE — After a string of thefts and vandalism at Dr. Jose Rizal Park in Seattle, a benefit concert was held at the Rainier Arts Center to raise money for new safety measures at the beloved space in Beacon Hill.

Jose Rizal is considered a national hero in the Philippines; the park was named in his honor in 1973.

In October 2024, a statue in his honor was vandalized and several bronze plaques were stolen from the park. 

The statue was installed in 1989
