New ordinance protects Snohomish River, builders challenge it in court

Builders are suing to stop an ordinance passed by voters giving the Snohomish River rights similar to those of children.

EVERETT, Wash. — As Abi Ludwig looks out over the Snohomish River, she worries about its health.

“It’s so beautiful,” she said. “So peaceful.”

Beneath its glassy surface, the river is sick. It’s is polluted with motor oil, lead, and farm runoff. That is why Abi believes it needs special protection.

“The idea is to prevent harm in the first place because ecosystems are very fragile,” said Ludwig.
