Packed cold weather shelters are feeling the strain.
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Whatcom County’s cold weather shelter has housed 230 different people this winter.
That’s double the usual number.
In fact, more people used the shelter by the end of January than all of last winter.
Officials are allowing people to stay an extra hour in the morning and are expanding capacity from 70 to 90 beds.
The shelter has been at capacity or beyond for each of the 12 nights it has been open this year.
