Harrell says Seattle Police Department reported high number of recruits under new leadership initiatives

Harrell said Seattle’s new police chief, Shon Barnes, will start in late January or early February.

SEATTLE — Mayor Bruce Harrell discussed Seattle’s new police chief and addressed criticisms about police practices and crime in a one-on-one interview with KING 5 on Tuesday. 

Harrell said Seattle’s new police chief, Shon Barnes, will start in late January or early February. Barnes has been serving as chief of police in Madison since February 2021. 

The mayor highlighted Barnes’ success in recruiting women and reducing crime in Madison, Wisconsin as key factors in his hiring. There was about a 67% decrease in homicides in Madison under Barnes’ leadership,
