The sun is approaching its 11-year maximum of solar activity, which increases the frequency of geomagnetic storms and chance of northern lights.
SEATTLE — The northern lights could be visible in Washington state Thursday night, capping off a week of geomagnetic activity from an active sunspot.
Geomagnetic activity is ranked as a Kp 4 on Thursday night on a scale of one to nine. This means there is weak activity. However, northern Washington is within the view line of the aurora, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
